Basic Burritos

Basic Burritos
Whole or Sprouted Grain Tortillas
Our Very Favorite Refried Beans
Cooked Brown Rice (optional, makes them more filling)
Cheezy Sauce
Diced Green Chili's (Optional)

Spread out as much or as little of the beans, rice, etc. on a tortilla like this.....

Roll up like this.....

These make great dinners when we are traveling they are easy to wrap up in paper towels, put them in gallon ziplocks while they are warm and put them into a small cooler (without ice of course).  They stay warm, travel well.  I can just give them to everyone while we are driving.  The kids don't make much mess at all and they are filling!  A lot of times I will also add sprouts! Best Burrito Recipe here!
Note: By the way a lot of times I make extras of these and freeze them! Great for a quick meal or to use later for Burrito Casserole. If they are for Burrito Casserole I don't usually worry about putting in the cheezy sauce since there is a lot on top of the casserole.

Tammie do you normally make your own tortillas or do you buy them? From experience my tortillas are pretty tough. Do you have a tortilla recipe that you use?

That's a good traveling idea! My kids, however, can be very messy (the twins especially). I'll have to try it sometime though. My oldest says she doesn't like "beans." Yet, she likes the "sauce" on taco pizza, in quesadillas, and in burritos. It's a little silly, but she's so much less picky than she used to be, and for that, I am thankful.

Can you use brewers yeast in place of nutritional yeast for the cheesy sauce? Does nutritional yeast taste the same as brewers yeast? Brewers yeast makes me gag!

LucyH: Some people call nutritional yeast brewers yeast but they are NOT the same thing. Be sure it is called nutritional yeast, it's yellow flakes.

Queen Mommy: I have found being sure to make my beans nice and thick (meaning use less water) and/or add extra rice seems to make it so they are not near as messy. Also for the younger kids I usually don't put as much filling.

My husband had a heart attack over the summer (at the age of 34) and we have yet to sway his love for Taco Bell...I'm going to have to give this a try! Thank you again for sharing your recipes with us. I have been stopping by for years but now I am desperate to change our diets.

Vanessa: Sorry your comment went to my spam and I just noticed it. Yes I have made my own tortillas there is a great whole wheat one at this link http://www.simplehealthytasty.com/2008/04/whole-wheat-flour-tortillas.html

And Yes they can be a pain. I do usually buy them I get both whole wheat and sprouted grain ones at our health food store. I have friends that make their own sprouted wheat ones and are going to show me how as soon as I get a handy dandy tortilla press. I think that's the only way to go if you always want to make your own because you can make lots at a time and freeze them.

The recipe posted though is a good one not too hard just the rolling out part which I usually convince Ryan to do. They are super tasty but we usually only make them if we need tortillas and I happen to be out.

Thanks for the burrito recipe. Your cheezy sauce turns out a lot more orange than mine, I am trying to think if there's an ingredient I am not putting in.

As so many of your recipes use cheezy sauce, do you make a big batch and freeze some, or at the beginning of the week?

Emily: I probably just use more red bell pepper. I usually make a double batch and just use a whole red bell pepper. No I don't freeze it but I always make a double batch when I make it that will usually last us a week or two depending on our meals.

My boys loved it! I've been looking for healthy ideas to take on the road instead of what's available out there!

How long will the burritos stay warm during travel if packed as described in your post?

FeistyGirl: I have had them stay warm for at least 2 hours and not really warm but not cold for over 4.
