Creamsicle Green Smoothie

I have yet to meet someone who doesn't like this green smoothie! It doesn't taste green at all! It tastes much like a Creamsicle! Give it a try your kids will love it! And if they ask why it is green just tell them it's a Shrek or Swamp Smoothie or something! ;)

Creamsicle Green Smoothie
1/2 cup water
1 cup Rice or Almond milk
2-3 LARGE spoonfuls of Orange juice concentrate
1/2 avocado, (optional for extra creaminess)
1 Large bunch of Spinach
1 teaspoon vanilla
Frozen Peaches (about 2 cups)

Place all ingredients in blender. Blend until nice and smooth!

I made this today. We didn't have orange juice concentrate so I put a large fresh orange in it instead and a little agave. It still turned out pretty good- Dan loved it!

Thanks for visiting my blog! I am so into green smoothies of the last few weeks. I have a very similar combination and we love it!

Oh Tam....sounds yum. Usually, I try to hide the green color for the kids...but why not go with it. Green Popsicles were always one of my faves.

There's something about it being green...but o.k. I'll give it a try sometime...clever combo !

Pretty good! Thanks for the recipe!
I'm getting over a cold and this is the perfect thing for me right now...especially since my tummy has been very picky regarding food!

Interesting recipe. I prefer to make my green smoothies with just fruit, green and water as Victoria Boutenko recommends. I drink a green smoothie for lunch, it is helping me with weight and bad food cravings.

Do you put spinach in there raw or cook it first? Sorry if that sounds like a dumb question, but I don't really use spinach much so I need a little guidance. Thanks!

Tammie said...

Lisa: It is fresh Spinach. Raw not cooked. Not a dumb question a very good one in fact we are all learning asking questions is a good way to learn. ;) It's important to have the Spinach raw becuase cooking it destroys the enzymes and a lot of the nutrients. If I have a bunch in my fridge though and it is going to go bad before I can use it all I will put it in the freezer. Still works great for green smoothies frozen like that.

Can you use kale instead of spinach? Would the amount be the same?

Tammie said...

Dena: You could but Kale is much stronger than spinach so it will change the flavor. If you want some of the added nutrition of Kale I would start with only half to maybe a whole leaf.

This was my family's very first smoothie. Bearing in mind we're a Junk Food family (our idea of 'healthy' is ground beef vegetable soup - from canned vegies!), ALL of us tolerated it, although we also stated we wished it were sweet-tasting. I think this might have come from two mistakes, though: (1) an OJ concentrate we typically don't like when added to water, and (2) a very bitter-tasting bag of frozen peaches.
For anybody new out there just learning, I think it's important to begin with product you know you like already.
By the way, we used a whole, 10-oz bag of ready-to-eat spinach in there. We ended up adding a tiny bit more almond milk plus an extra spoonful of O.J. to try to cover-up the spinach.
Was that because we're new to this, or did we add too much spinach? Thanks in advance!
PS I personally liked it! Just a matter of people with NO experience with healthy stuff!

Jen: Way to go trying new healthy things. YES you do get used to that much Spinach but it's quite a lot for a first try. Also if you wanted it a little sweeter I like using agave also extra OJ works too.

Tammie: Thank you! We froze the leftover smoothie in ice cubes then threw them in a freezer bag. This morning we were all 'dragging', so I tried thawing them a few minutes, adding a couple tablespoons of rice milk, plus added a little bit of agave.. MAN did that make a difference! We were fighting over the last few drops! An hour later, we're feeling great! (Thanks so much for your advice!)

I just modified this to fit our tastebuds and loved it! Here is what I did:
1 cup water
1 cup Rice or Almond milk (or 1 cup and 15 almonds)
6 dates
1 tbsp ground flax seed
1/3 cup orange juice concentrate
1 Large bunch of Spinach
1/2 avocado (optional, for creaminess)
1 teaspoon vanilla
Frozen Peaches (about 2 cups)

Julie: That is great! Thanks for sharing I love the idea of avocado for added fat and creaminess. I will be trying it!

I do a similar version to the one Julie listed above. I've been looking thru some of your recipes and love the Carrot butter post(I was just trying to think of what to do with all these carrots I have).
