Yep Low should do it! Sometimes if I get a slow start in the morning and don't get it going until like 11:00 I will put it on high for a few hours then down to low so I don't burn it. But yeah if you start it in the morning low should be just fine!
I had to add a lot more water as this cooked but my baby and I together ate three bowls of it and I don't even really like split pea soup. Vegetable soup is about the only thing she will eat these days so I'm grateful for a new recipe. Thanks!
I agree with TLO. I added additional water to allow room for the barley to cook per package directions.

I have bought Sucanat, raw sugar and now at Walmart I found organic sugar. I have also heard of Turbinado and Stevia. What is the best choice as far as health? Cassie: You are so welcome! I started this blog because I was hoping that it would help Mother's to feed their families more healthy. I was typing up my recipes anyway so I thought why not!I have used all of those types of sweeteners. Personally I prefer Sucanat. I think it contains the most nutrients. Turbinado is raw sugar and I do use that and even the organic from Wal-Mart if I need something that isn't so dark like for my whipped creme. I don't think they are as healthy but still much better then refined white sugar. I would NOT overdo them of course. Stevia is a great choice too since it is a naturally sweet herb but I really don't care for the after taste of it. But you may find you like it. I have really come to like Agave for certain things too.Ummm no I really have not thought about starting a homeschool blog. I'm so glad we homeschool though I LOVE it! I am happy to answer ANY questions you have about it and share what I have leared over the past 8 years I have been doing it. It has been such a FUN journey! If you have not read A Thomas Jefferson Education I highly recomend it! Also Dumbing Us Down and Leadership Education, The Phases of Learning!Keep up the great work! It will last for generations! I have just started reading your blog and am really liking it. I have a couple of questions. Do you ever eat dinner out? Also, do you go to other people's homes for dinner? How do you handle those situations? Also, when your children are playing at a friends do they just decline snacks when visiting? Also, do they eat cake at birthday parties? I am just wondering how I can incorporate some of these ways of healthy living and expand them to outside the home-eventually. Thank you for doing all of this.
cprolf: You bet we eat out! I do have my favorite places though and I'm sure we don't go out near as often as most people because well I love a home cooked meal and ummmm most places my husband will say yeah this was good but I like your cooking so much better! We can usually get a pretty good salad or lots of veggies and things but they NEVER have the heathy sauces and dressings. Most places do have olive oil and vinegar so it works just not as tasty. I love it when we find a really healthy place that caters our way of eating but you will usually pay more but for a special occasion it's worth it! You can totally eat out I still don't think it's as healthy but if you are creative you don't have to ban yourself from eating out!Of course I love to socialize and visit others. A lot of times I prefer to do the entertaining so they come to our house and I make them dinner. But when we do get an invite it's usually from people who know us pretty well so they ask what would be good. I always offer to help and when we go visit family I ALWAYS bring lots of food and I NEVER expect others to cater to me. Many people are VERY considerate though and are nice to not add things like ground beef the the spaghetti sauce but put it on the side for those who want it.Again with the friends and snacks thing they usually know us pretty well and are very considerate. My kids have also gotten pretty good at saying "No Thank You!" I have one child that sometimes feels left out and has expressed that to me. I have told him he needs to choose for himself that I cannot always be there to make sure he eats healthy. I teach them and it's amazing how well they understand. When they don't feel forced I'm surprised how often they will choose fruit over other things. I think when they have had a healthy diet consistantly for some time they totally notice the difference in how they feel when they eat very much of something they are not used to.To be honest the birthday party thing has not been a problem. I love birthdays but feel they are more of a family event and are way overdone and parents spend too much money and effort on something very fleeting. I don't do huge kid parties for my kids. It's usually a fun good time though that makes good memories of fun times together as a family! I let them choose their dinner and cake for me to make for them. I have let them go to a few close friends parties and again they choose but I do bribe them with a treat, or send something with them or again the friend usually knows us pretty well and has something for my kids!It really just a little adjustment to a different lifestyle but you can make it work for you and your family just help to make it fit you! It does take a little effort but it's not really harder just different.
Just for another perspective. I do find the heathy lifestyle very isolating in real life. I'll spare you most of the details. There are no healthy (or vegan) restaurants around here. My husband can't tell the difference in energy level or digestion between home cooked healthy meals and the other stuff he eats. I actually go visiting family less because I feel so motivated to stick to my plan and I don't always want to deal with temptation.... I'll spare you the rest... :)
Denice: I'm sorry you find it isolating. I do agree that it takes an adjustment but when I first started down this path I promised myself that I would NOT let it alienate me from those I loved the most! It does take a bit of creativity and a sense of humor with all the people especially family who can give you a hard time. But I DO live in real life and I have found I'm only as isolated as I let myself be. And as far as temptation goes well I think there will ALWAYS be temptation around that's just part of life. Also I am really surprised there are not a lot of healthy places to eat where you live! I know you also homeschool too do you have homeschool support groups around? Before I started with better nutrition I ate ate every restaurant possible. I was tired and heavier. When I started sugar-free I could not find a single restaurant to eat at. I remember going to one and ordering a salad without dressing and they brought the salad with a fruity sugar vinegarette all over it. I was hungry, I could not bare to sit and watch everyone else eat and walked out and waited in the parking lot starved and hot. It's just easier not to go. Add vegan or "just" vegetarian to the restrictions and I just can't see much reason to eat out. I haven't been as 100% strict on the sugar. The Vegetarian options are more limiting.For the most part I am busy at home and its not much of a loss not to go out when I am a homebody anyway, but I do wonder if I'll EVER get to travel and enjoy meals at meetings and get togethers.

I don't have much time for activities outside of work and family, but the few I go to, I try not to make eating the central part. I find at pot lucks the food is mostly mushmash and has meat in it. I have already mentioned how the food served at Temple is pretty gross.The food that is brought into my office is so distguisting there is no temptation, I just eat alone. Since I don't eat at restaurants, I rarely, rarely go out for business reasons. The salad was not fresh as the last lunch I went to.While I am VERY excited to be a part of an organic co-op and exchange ideas, it is not necessarily a vegetarian or vegan support group. Instead of labeling myself an 100% vegan, vegetarian, sugar-free, Raw or anything else, I find it much better to drink my smoothie, fresh jusice and salad through out the day and be more flexibile at the main meal (even when internally I'd prefer my veggies). The other thing I'd like to know is if you go visiting family overnight how you pack food for all those meals. Its trying just to get out the door with kids let alone, having enough food and the equipment to make satisfying meals for me. I don't know what I am eating for dinner later and breakfast tomorrow in my own house, let alone plan for it to go out of town. I suppose with experience, it would get better. But once again, its easier just not to go...If you are with the Homeschool groups and they are eating "healthier" does that mean they are eating vegan? You are 100% vegan, right?
This was fabulous!It made a ton. I made it with yellow split peas (I have a very bad memory of green split peas that I can't get over). I also served left overs to a group of my friends and they all loved it as well. One went home and made it for dinner that night.Thanks!
Tammie,I just tried this recipe (minus the potatoes and thyme since I was out) and oh my goodness it was good! I don't have a slowcooker so we done it stovetop which was still very fast! I'm so excited to have found this recipe. I've been having a hard time incorporating more lentil and beans in our diet. This was a hit with most of the family...thank you! I'm trying to add healthy recipes as we find them to our collection. The cookbook my mom gave me was of all the family desserts that are full of processed foods and dairy, and God love her, she's the dearest woman I know...but I want to eat better. I want my kids to eat better. And most importantly I don't want to be overweight, diabetic, and ridden with heart problems before my 40's.I so appreciate your blog along with so many other inspirations. Thank you!
Wow! wow! wow! This soup is DELICIOUS!! We just made it yesterday for dinner with the Crunchy Cabbage Salad which is also out of this world! I'm so glad I found your blog and can't wait to try more of your recipes!!
